I recommend reading the wikipedia article part of how the kinect’s technology works and its limitations. The SimpleOpenNI library for processing can be found here. This gives instructions on how to install the library.

Since the Kinect is an IR based sensor, it doesn’t work well under direct sunlight which can distort the image coming back into the Kinect.  Theoretically, the Kinect can measure distance up to millimeter accuracy which seems to be more or less true.  I’ve personally never used more than 1 cm accuracy which works perfectly.  SimpleOpenNI can only use the cameras as of version 1.96.  The microphones and servo motor can’t be accessed.

Now that we understand how the Kinect works, we will learn how to power the Kinect.  If you look at the official power adaptor for a kinect, it says the output current is 1.08 Amps at 12 volts.  I used a 7812 voltage regulator and two capacitors.
